|Abstract|
Architecture continually informs and is informed by its modes of representation and construction, perhaps never more so than now, when digital media and emerging technologies are rapidly expanding what we conceive to be formally, spatially, and materially possible.
This course explores the relationship between architecture, manufacturing techniques and digital technology; it will employ ideas from industrial, mechanical, and technical construction methods to formulate designs, to reconsider spaces, and to make the transition from digital to physical. We will explore changes in process when drawings no longer represent; they MAKE. Using digital technologies paired with analogue craft we will formulate techniques to create dynamic systems and geometric profiles. This course will analyze the evolution of MAKING and will investigate methods employed in the industry through the exploration of built and un-built works, conceptual ideas and digital research.
|Process|
The course will begin with an introduction into information theory and research advanced techniques in digital design. We will utilize the computer as apparatus for investigation and define new territories for restructuring design practices. By incorporating the computer as a design tool we will engage in a process of looking at how digital investigation becomes a fluid integration into constructed principles. We will provide the designer an introduction into software and hardware resources, which will focus on the creation, analysis, and production of new spatial entities for urban insertion.
